Ethermine mining pool began censoring transactions that have a connection with the sanctioned Tornado Cash mixer
The largest mining pool of the Ethereum network, Ethermine, began blocking transactions related to the Tornado Cash mixer. This drew the attention of a Twitter user under the nickname @takenstheorem.
The last time Ethermine turned on transactions with a mixer was on August 9 on the 15306892 block. Then the block contained ten transactions for 10 ETH, which passed through Tornado Cash.
At the same time, as noted by the media, users began to use other mining pools to bypass censorship. These included P2Pool, 2Miners and Hiveon. At the time of writing, Ethermine representatives have not commented on reports of blocking transactions.
Recall that in early August, the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions against the Tornado Cash mixer. According to the regulator’s calculations, the platform has helped launder assets worth more than $ 7 billion since its launch in 2019.
Shortly after the announcement of the sanctions, the issuing company of one of the most capitalized stablecoins – USD Coin (USDC) – Circle froze 75,000 USDC of cryptomixer users and 149 USDC, which the project received in the form of donations. Analysts at The Block Research found that the volume of transfers to the platform decreased by 78.5% compared to the period before the announcement of sanctions against Tornado Cash.
Members of the cryptocurrency community were outraged by the decision of the US authorities to impose sanctions against the mixer. Some users even began to “spray” 0.1 ETH on the addresses of millionaires in order to include them in the sanctions lists, thereby showing the ill-considered legal blocking of Tornado Cash.
