The University of Namibia in 2024 will launch a master’s program in training in blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLT) for the development of technology startups in the country.
The head of the IT department and chairman of the steering committee of the University of Namibia (UNAM) Samuel Nuungulu (Samuel Nuungulu) said that the educational institution is already introducing materials related to the blockchain into educational programs. In 2024, UNAM will offer a full-fledged course on blockchain and DLT for masters. Thus, the university intends to lay the foundation for the development of start-ups that will apply these latest technologies in various industries of the country, and, possibly, throughout the African continent.
The UNAM steering committee also includes Gurvy Kavei. He recently released a book for newcomers to the industry with which they can understand the basics of blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Kavey stated the need to introduce a similar program on the blockchain, as the Central Bank of Namibia is exploring the possibility of launching its own digital currency. In addition, an increasing number of public and private companies in Namibia are expressing a willingness to incorporate this technology into their internal processes.
Recall that in 2019, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) also launched a master’s program on blockchain. In this, he was assisted by IBM and Norilsk Nickel, as well as the Blockchain Competence Center “Idea”. Last year, the first graduates of this program have already received diplomas.
Blockchain training programs are being introduced by many educational institutions around the world. A few years ago, similar initiatives were implemented by the University of Malta and the University of British Columbia (UBC) to train programmers in the skills needed to work in the industry.
