The regulator will develop a roadmap for the introduction of a new type of national currency by the end of 2023
The Central Bank should “fill the bumps” in testing the digital ruble, said the first deputy chairman of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation Olga Skorobogatova in an interview with TASS. According to her, tests on real operations will make it possible to understand what needs to be finalized in the project before the introduction of a new type of national currency.
“We have to stuff the bumps in a good way. Testing on real operations will give us the opportunity to understand what needs to be twisted and brought to mind, what to refine, what to change, “said Skorobogatova.
According to her, there are now 12 banks in the pilot group of the project, and three more want to join. Several applications from non-financial organizations were also received. More than half of the pilot group are going at a good pace, which allows us to meet the stated deadlines, says the representative of the Central Bank.
By the end of 2023, the Bank of Russia will have already developed a roadmap for the introduction of the digital ruble, Skorobogatova said. She added that cross-border interaction of the digital ruble with digital currencies of other countries will also be worked out in order to make the Russian financial system more independent.
“In my opinion, the national digital currency will appear in all self-respecting states on the horizon of three years. And we will need to build cross-border cooperation in this direction,” the representative of the Central Bank said.
The Central Bank plans to start testing the digital ruble in real operations and on bank customers in April 2023, and the regulator wants to try to use smart contracts in the pilot of the digital ruble. Previously, the pilot project on the digital ruble on real customers was supposed to be launched from 2024, but now it has been decided to postpone the deadline for a year ahead.
