What happened? Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications Anton Gorelkin said that the Bank of Russia has softened its attitude to the use of cryptocurrencies. He explained that now the regulator allows the use of digital assets in foreign trade and outside the country. According to him, this will bring the introduction of the relevant bill to the State Duma closer.
What else did Gorelkin say? The deputy noted that the Bank of Russia is still against the use of cryptocurrencies in the financial structure of the Russian Federation, while stressing that the draft law “On Digital Currencies” developed by the Ministry of Finance also prohibits their use for internal settlements.
Gorelkin also said that representatives of the Federal Tax Service (FTS) and the Ministry of Finance announced their readiness to discuss cryptocurrency as an alternative to SWIFT for international payments.
What events have happened before? At the end of May, the first deputy chairman of the Bank of Russia, Ksenia Yudaeva, said that the regulator does not object to the use of digital assets in international settlements and international financial infrastructure.
On May 30, the head of the State Duma Committee on Financial Markets, Anatoly Aksakov, said that it is not worth expecting a bill on cryptocurrencies to be submitted to the State Duma in the near future. And the Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin, on the contrary, noted that the introduction of the bill in the Parliament is possible before the end of the spring session.
Earlier, the Bank of Russia has repeatedly criticized digital currencies. So, Ksenia Yudaeva compared them with financial pyramids and spoke about the threat of replacing the ruble with cryptocurrencies as the main means of payment.
