THE US authorities imprisoned a father and son for five years because of a multimillion-dollar business for the illegal sale of marijuana for bitcoin
A court in Washington sentenced Kenneth John Rule and his 28-year-old son Kenneth Warren Rule to five years in prison each because of a multimillion-dollar illegal business producing and selling marijuana for cryptocurrency. This was reported on the official website of the US Department of Justice.
“The couple not only produced and distributed marijuana. […] they also illegally laundered huge amounts of bitcoin obtained from sales,” prosecutor Nick Brown said in a statement.
In addition to psychotropic substances, law enforcement also found more than a dozen firearms, some of which “were loaded and ready to be used to protect the drug trade,” Brown said.
Kenneth Rule first caught the attention of law enforcement in April 2018, when investigators became aware of a certain user under the pseudonym “Gimacut93”, who was engaged in an unlicensed business for the exchange of bitcoin.
According to the US Department of Justice, Rule, basically, laundered cryptocurrency in public places – in Starbucks coffee shops. One of the buyers of bitcoins was an undercover agent.
In one of the control purchases, an undercover agent gave the impression to Ruhl that he planned to launder money related to human trafficking. Rule agreed to exchange bitcoins for cash knowing that they were the proceeds of crime. In total, Rule exchanged $142,000 worth of bitcoins for an undercover agent. For all the time of the existence of the business, the Rulov family earned more than $ 13 million.
