According to an announcement made Thursday, Azra Games, a blockchain gaming startup, has raised $15 million in seed funding.
Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) led the round with additional input from NFX, Coinbase Ventures, Play Ventures and Franklin Templeton.
Azra Games will direct funds to create its first game Project Arcanas, a science fiction epic with massive battles and elements of a role-playing game (RPG). The game will feature web3 technologies such as virtual collectibles.
The firm was founded by Mark Otero, the former CEO of video game giant Electronic Arts (EA), who headed the popular video game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes.
“Mark Otero is an experienced game director who has been at the forefront of mobile free games with the popular Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes franchise,” a16z general partner Jonathan Lai said in a statement. “We are excited to partner with Mark and the Azra team as they apply their expertise in web3 games to create new types of gameplay and design the economy.”
This month, A16z also funded other blockchain game launches such as LootRush, in addition to launching a $600 million venture capital fund for blockchain games, on May 18.
